自家製かき氷 / Shaved Ice

ここ数年、こだわりのかき氷が雑誌に特集されているのを見ます。

昨年、谷中のとあるかき氷専門店に行ったところ、３時間待ちと言われました。

がっかりして帰る途中に立ち寄った両国の甘味処でも生イチゴの

かき氷がやっており、とても美味しかったので、これからここで

毎年食べようと思っていました。

In recent years, shaved ices are in the boom. 

Last summer, we visited a famous shaved ice speciality restaurant, but

the line was 3 hours wait, so we had to give up.

でも、今年そのお店に行ったら凄い行列で入れませんでした。

We found another Japanese sweet restaurant which serves good shaved ice, 

but this year, there was also long line. 

こうなったら自分の家で作ろうということで、

かき氷マシーンを手に入れ、

蜜も本格的に手作りしました。

So we decided to make our own. 

氷屋さんでブロックの氷を仕入れて作ります。

冷凍庫から取り出してすぐ削るとジャリジャリしてしまうので、

１５分程室温において氷をやわらかくしてから削ると

ふわっとした氷に仕上がります。

Block ice should be in room temperature for 15 minutes 

to soften. If we shave it without waiting, the shaved ice become to hard. 

基本の数種の砂糖が入ったシロップに、

抹茶、生イチゴ、練乳も市販のものに少し手を加えました。

Basic syrup made with various sugars, Green tea syrup, and strawberry syrup. 

White one is condensed milk mixed with basic syrup and raw cream. 

甘酸っぱい生イチゴかき氷。

これでもうお店で並ぶ必要はありません。

So gooood! We don't need to stand in the long line any more. 

夏の寄せ植え/Summer Arrangement

再び猛暑の日々がやってきました。

Hot weather again. 

今年の庭はコガネムシと蝶がたくさんやってきます。

Chafers and butterflies visit our balcony often this summer. 

重なり合う二頭のアゲハ蝶。

Two butterflies connected, they even fly keeping this posture. 

トケイソウも咲いています。

Passion fruits flower. 

寄せ植えの新作。

真夏は店に出回る花の種類が少ないです。

夏らしい派手な花の寄せ植えを作りました。

There are few flowers in the shop in summer. 

I made this with the concept "gorgeous summer."

大きな鉢には沢山花が入るので、やりがいがあります。

The big pot contains many kind of flowers. 

夏の庭/Summer Balcony

暑さに強い植物たちがぐんぐん育っています。

With lot of sunshine, herbs growing faster in July.

ルッコラなどのハーブ。７月になって成長も早まりました。

Arugula is growing in three pots,

いくつかの鉢で育ててローテーションで

毎日食べられるようにしています。

So that we can eat it everyday. 

２年目のノボタンも花を咲かせました。

Melastome started to bloom. 

子供の手の届かないところで、静かに育つ、ブラックベリー。

どうやって食べようか、いまから考えています。

マフィンが第一候補です。

Blackberries are growing but not ripe yet.

I plan to make muffins with them. 

この時期にもイチゴが育っています。

このイチゴは生で食べても酸っぱくて美味しくないのですが

加工すればそれなりになるのでしょうか。

Strawberries are growing in this season. 

I never eat these because of sour taste, but maybe edible 

if I cook them with sugar. 

隣のトマトの鉢からやってきたのか、

別の鉢からトマトの葉が顔を出しました。

Tomato is growing in another pot. 

Should I pick or leave it. 

紫色の花。奥はミントの花。

とても涼しげです。

バルコニーファームより/From the balcony farm

プランターで育てたルッコラと、

ブルーベリー、実家で育てた玉ねぎを和えた

サラダを作りました。

Arugula picked from the balcony farm. 

Mixed with freshly picked blueberries and onions that my father grew.

ピリッとした味わいがたまらない。

すぐ食べつくしてしまいそうなので、

ルッコラはもっとたくさん量産する予定です。

I love this pungently taste.

I need to grow more in order to be able to eat it every day.  

アサリはよく見ると、素敵なデザインの貝殻をまとう

ものがいます。採れる地域によって色合いが微妙に違います。

来年こそは潮干狩りに行きたい。

Some clams are very fashionable. 

Next year, I want to go picking clams in the beach. 

ボンゴレパスタにバジルを添えました。

虫食いの跡があるのも、無農薬の自家栽培ならでは。

Basil is also picked from the garden. 

It has a warm bite, but it's a proof of pesticide-free herb.

食後は勝手にウッドデッキの隙間から

伸び放題になったミントを使って

モロッコ風ミントティー。

Lastly, made Moroccan mint tea. (kind of) 

They grew in between wood deck. Cannot use them up. 

紅茶を煮立てて、ミントを投入すると、

部屋中にスッとした香りが漂います。

本当は中国茶で作るのですが、紅茶でも美味しいです。

暑い国らしく、砂糖を沢山入れて甘ーく仕上げるのがポイントです。

In boiled water, put tea and mint. 

Immediately, mint scent spreads in the room. 

Put a lot of sugar. 

In Morocco, Chinese tea is used, but this time 

I used earl grey.

ミルクティーにしました。

ホットティーだけど、口の中がすーっと涼しくなる、

不思議な飲み物です。

Hot milk tea, very refreshing. 

キキョウの寄せ植え/Balloon Flower Arrangement

キキョウの寄せ植え。

万葉集では「秋の七草」らしいのですが、

夏に咲いていると、涼しげです。

Balloon flower is one of the seven autumn flowers, 

but this blue flower is also suitable in summer and make me feel cooler.

「砂漠のバラ」アデニウムが咲きました。

ぽってりとした幹が特徴です。

多肉植物の仲間に属します。

Desert rose started to bloom. 

It belongs to the group of succulents. 

フェンネルの花の形と香りが好みらしく、

次々とハチがやってきます。

スズメバチや、ミツバチです。

私の好きな、フカフカスカーフを首にまいた、

クマバチは今年は姿を現していません。

Bees love fennel flowers. 

I've seen two kinds today, a hive bee and a yellow hornet. 

Never seen carpenter bees this year. They are my favorite. 

実と種/Fruits and Seeds

寄せ植えに植えていた紫の葉っぱ、

いつの間にか実をつけていました。

A Plant with purple leaves was growing in the pot. 

Now it has fruits.

綺麗な紫色の葉で、ナス科の植物を思わせます。

実は小さいナスのよう。でも観賞用トウガラシにも似ています。

調べたら「パープルフラッシュ」という名前で、

ナス科トウガラシ属だそう。納得。

It looks like an eggplant, but also look like a pepper. 

This plant's name is "purple flash," Nightshade family of plant,

 and it's one of ornamental peppers. 

先日のフラワーマーケットで購入した、

「オルヤラ、グランディフローラ」

清楚で小さな花を沢山咲かせ、切り花にもできて重宝しました。

こぼれ種でたくさん育つとのことですが、我が家はプランターなので、

種を収穫して、来年また育てたいと思います。

"Orlaya grandiflora," I bought this flower in the flower market last month. 

It blooms white elegant flowers

清楚だったお嬢さんの成れの果ては、こんなトゲトゲしい姿でした。

若く美しいお嫁さんが、年を取って鬼嫁へと変貌を遂げる様を

想像してしまいました。

Now it has pips, their looks is far from elegance.

ヒョウタンは親つるを摘み取って、子つるを

伸ばしたらたくさん雌の花が出てきました。

受粉したひょうたんは、数日でとても大きく成長します。

Gourds started to grow rapidly. 

男と女/Man & Woman

去年から育てているひょうたん、

知らなかったけど、雄と雌があるらしいのです。

I've grown bottle gourds last year.

But I didn't notice that they had male/female flowers. 

こちらは雌花。

まだ花が咲く前からポッコリひょうたんの形をしています。

This is a female flower.

She already has a small gourd. 

こちらは雄花。

花の下にひょうたんはありません。

These are male flowers. 

雄花には、おしべ、雌花にはめしべしか持っていないので、

それぞれを受粉させないと、あの小さなひょうたんは

大きくならないらしいのです。

Male flowers have only stamens, female flowers have only pistils. 

The small gourd doesn't grow bigger unless it is pollinated.

今年は雄花ばかりが目立ちます。

親のつるを摘心しないと、雌花は咲かないようです。

This year so many male flowers and little female flowers. 

In order to increase female ones, the parent vine should be cut. 

変わった実の付け方の植物で、もう一つ、オリーブ。

オリーブは自分のつけた花でなく、他のオリーブの木の花粉と

受粉しやすいと言われています。

今年は一本しか花が咲かなかったのに、実をつけています。

最近は軒先にオリーブの木を植えている家も多いので、

そこから花粉が飛んできたのでしょうか。

Another interesting plant is olives. 

They don't usually pollinate within their own flowers, but with flowers from other olive trees. 

This year only one olive tree bloomed flowers but it has olive fruits. 

Maybe the stamens from someone's garden flew over to our balcony. 

オリーブをつけるには苛性ソーダという劇薬を使わなければ

ならないので、（使わないやり方もありますが）

まだ我が家で作ったことはありません。

In order to make olive pickle, caustic soda, which is dangerous drug, 

is usually used. So I've never tried before.
